In the book, the caregiver is a pedophile who loves the vampire, and they use eachother in turn. Thus, the relationship between vampire and boy is one of hope, a beautiful relationship shining within the bleakness of the rest of their lives. The photograph removes that delicate beauty and hope and changes the relationship instead into one that is simply the continuation of a tragic cycle.
