Oh man, oh man OH MAN! Just had a listen to a track from DevilDriver’s hotly anticipated fifth studio album, which is due for release February 22, 2011. Frontman Dez Fafara has described Beast as “pissed” and “technical”, and in a recent interview with Clink Music Magazine, DD drummer John Boecklin said of the new album:
On previous record we were really experimenting as broadly as we could. Thinking about what other concepts can we could come up with that aren’t exactly full blown metal, even though the albums are heavy metal. But this time around there was no experimenting to this record, it’s just really aggressive and attacking. You’re not gonna be thinking what the hell is that supposed to mean, or this is completely different to DevilDriver, it’s just DevilDriver on 10 the whole way through. The record sounds really eager; it feels like we are just fucking going to fall off a cliff. That was what we were aiming for and that is what we did, and it worked.
It’s a hateful record, I can tell you that. Dez always has a positive attitude and in the past there have been positive lyrics but this record Dez is getting a lot of shit off his chest. It’s a pissed-off angry record, that’s for sure.
As I drummer I think the band wrote some really heavy fucking riffs on this record, musically that is the focus when I listen to it. Personally I have never been a fan of too much death metal drumming, even though I kind of slice it in where I am at. We tend to focus it all it all on the groove aspect of the music. I think the guitars really stand out musically on this record.
The album’s opening track, Dead To Rights, is currently available for free download from Road Runner Records HERE. The drumming is faster, the groove is groovier and the vocals are voraciously vicious. To keep it simple, the song kicks loads of ass – but don’t take my word for it. Download it YOURSELF!
