Gok Wan is my hero. He has relieved the hours of boredom that I have been slowly accruing whilst my three month old baby girl is attached to my boob, guzzling for endless minutes each day. My husband thinks I am nuts because all I want to do is get to a Haberdashery and buy some bows, flowers, ribbon – any shit that I can use to garnish my clothing. Husband generously offered to support ‘project embellishment’ by picking up some leaves and sticks to complement the soon-to-buy items that I will attach to my wardrobe. Funny. With a new baby, we are on a serious budget and new clothes are a no-no for a while but there is still a smile on my face (an anomoly for someone who loves clothes but can’t buy any). Why? Because good old Gok has inspired me to funk up my old clothes, which I intend to do with as many accoutrements I can find. The potential for me to end up looking like a Christmas tree is great, so I understand Husband’s mockery. Personally, I like the Christmas tree look thank you very much! There is no such thing as ‘too much’ or ‘overdone’ in my life.
Fashion is an interesting thing: a small group of designers decide what should be worn each season. The powers that be determine that there should be an eighties comeback, and there is; platforms should adorn the foot, and they do; blues and greens are this seasons colours, and they are. Store owners stock their boutiques with everything designer, the high street stores mimic everything designer.
Fashonistas look oh so fabulous in the look of the season and the common people look half so fabulous in cheaper versions of the look of the season. Then, according to the rule of fashion, clothes out-date and cannot be worn again, except for maybe a few key items. Lame.
I love and appreciate the sense of adventure, excess and theatre in the designs of John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood. These artists inspire my own sense of style (however debatable) and passion for street fashion. The brave souls who combine labels with charity shop with high street with ‘my granny’s old …’ with costume shop with ebay randomness, so that observers have no idea what comes from where, are my favourite. I like it when people embrace innovation and individualism in pursuit of expression. Clothes are suggestions of personality and I am a fan of bold statements. The streets of London are home to statement-street-style, which reflects the eclectic, cosmopolitan character of the city – a further inspiration. I welcome Gok’s mission to get people excited about fashion as a means of asserting character, irrespective of cost. And I intend to ride on the wave of inspiration and add spans of paraphernalia to the layers of my already paraphernaliated clothing. Because it’s me.
