Hail to the Pumpkin King

JacknightmareJack Skellington is a figure not only familiar to Tim Burton fans but a character that has become a cult symbol of today’s popular culture. The protagonist from Burton’s film, The Nightmare Before Christmas, has been monopolised by Disney and turned into an icon. In an amalgamation of Halloween and Christmas, the Pumpkin King and the inhabitants of Halloween Town even appear on a beautiful limited edition range of Disney Christmas decorations this year.

The Nightmare Before Christmas follows Jack Skellington’s search for meaning. The Pumpkin King, who leads Halloween Town in a terrifying celebration of Halloween, has grown tired of the same routine year after year. When wandering in the forest outside the town centre, Jack accidentally opens a portal to Christmas Town. Inspired by the feeling and style of Christmas, he presents his findings to the Halloween Town residents, through the impeded vision of Halloween-tinted goggles. In a desperate need to fill aJack and Sally lonely void, Jack leads the town in the hijack of Christmas, which includes the capture of poor Santa (Sandi Claws). Jack soon learns that his quest for meaning cannot be appeased by Christmas because he has compromised the essence of his character. Once the melancholic antihero embraces his identity as the one and only Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, he is able to recognise rag doll Sally’s love for him; a love that eclipses his skinny legs and big scary head. And it is this which gives his life meaning. Jack’s longing for unconditional acceptance and love represents a universal quest for meaning and, although decidedly surreal, Burton’s characters epitomise a humanness that transcends appearance. Tim Burton’s creative genius is beautifully assimilated in the stop frame animation of The Nightmare Before Christmas and his characters present a modern-day fairytale that will be passed down from generation to generation.

In honour of the Pumpkin King and the spirit of Halloween:

THIS IS HALLOWEEN (follow link to watch song)

Boys and girls of every age
Wouldn’t you like to see something strange?

Come with us and you will see
This, our town of Halloween

This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Pumpkins scream in the dead of night

This is Halloween, everybody make a scene
Trick or treat till the neighbors gonna die of fright
It’s our town, everybody screm
In this town of Halloween

I am the one hiding under your bed
Teeth ground sharp and eyes glowing red

I am the one hiding under yours stairs
Fingers like snakes and spiders in my hair

This is Halloween, this is Halloween

Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!
In this town we call home
Everyone hail to the pumpkin song

In this town, don’t we love it now?
Everybody’s waiting for the next surprise

Round that corner, man hiding in the trash cam
Something’s waiting no to pounce, and how you’ll…

Scream! This is Halloween
Red ‘n’ black, slimy green

Aren’t you scared?

Well, that’s just fine
Say it once, say it twice
Take a chance and roll the dice
Ride with the moon in the dead of night

Everybody scream, everbody scream

In our town of Halloween!

I am the clown with the tear-away face
Here in a flash and gone without a trace

I am the “who” when you call, “Who’s there?”
I am the wind blowing through your hair

I am the shadow on the moon at night
Filling your dreams to the brim with fright

This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!
Halloween! Halloween!

Tender lumplings everywhere
Life’s no fun without a good scare

That’s our job, but we’re not mean
In our town of Halloween

In this town

Don’t we love it now?

Skeleton Jack might catch you in the back
And scream like a banshee
Make you jump out of your skin
This is Halloween, everyone scream
Wont’ ya please make way for a very special guy

Our man jack is King of the Pumpkin patch
Everyone hail to the Pumpkin King

This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!

In this town we call home
Everyone hail to the pumpkin song

La la-la la, Halloween! Halloween!

Nightmare Before Christmas
