“My mission in life is to make everybody as uneasy as possible. I think we should all be as uneasy as possible, because that’s what the world is like.” – Edward Gorey
Edward Gorey. What a guy! I’m a realist at heart and I love that the grim, ghoulish, gruesome and grisly – okay, let’s just say it… ‘macabre’ – fantasy of a haunted tea-cosy, an evil garden, a doubtful guest, a glorious nosebleed, a gilded bat, a deflowered girl, an epileptic bicycle, a beastly baby and many other manner of bizarre concoction is inspired by a desire to agitate. Forcing people from their lackadaisical, vegetative state of couch-potato-dom into reaction and perhaps even thought is what LIFE is about. Life is not comfortable and Gorey hands us discomfort on a silver platter. The challenge is not to feign ignorance.
Thanks Edward, on your 88th birthday, for doing what you do. I am grateful for the unease!
